DOJ ADA Website & App Compliance Deadline Extended 1 Year
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has extended the accessibility compliance dates for government websites and apps by one year.
The filing was formally published on the Federal Register on April 20, 2026.
By this Interim Final Rule ("IFR"), the Department of Justice ("Department") is revising the regulations implementing Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") to extend the compliance dates for the requirements for web content and mobile application ("app") accessibility that were adopted on April 24, 2024.
The Interim Final Rule does not cancel the accessibility requirement. The ruling extends the compliance date to allow government entities additional time to meet the published WCAG 2.1, ADA Level AA technical requirements.
The compliance date for State and local government entities with a total population of 50,000 or more is extended from April 24, 2026, to April 26, 2027.
The compliance date for public entities with a total population of less than 50,000, or any special district government, is extended from April 26, 2027, to April 26, 2028.
In our continuing efforts to provide equal access to information, Brooks Jeffrey encourages all website and app clients to address ADA accessibility. This deadline extension allows for a thorough review of your website content to help ensure technical standards are addressed.
As a best practice, we recommend you manually review your site on a frequent basis - including all photos/images for proper alt text,
along with all PDFs, Word, and other documents added via the CMS, to ensure they meet current ADA guidelines.
Should you need assistance, Brooks Jeffrey can provide quotes for ADA scans, ADA remediation training, and content remediation services, upon request.
If any assistance with CMS functionality or resources for managing the site's content are needed, please schedule a free refresher training with Brooks Jeffrey (800.506.8064 M-F; 8am to 5pm CT). We are happy to help!
As standards change and evolve, additional programming modifications and content remediation will be required to maintain government compliance.
Brooks Jeffrey will provide updates as new information becomes available.
